Course Overview
During this one-day (two-half days if live trainig) interactive course, you will learn what the Kanban Method is, the principles and practices of the Method, and how you can build your Kanban proficiency. You will learn the basics of visualizing different types of work and associated risk. You will learn how to design and implement a Team Kanban board. You will also learn how to proceed to the next level with Kanban.
Course Content
The Team Kanban Practitioner course teaches the basics of the Kanban Method and serves as the entry-level starting point to an “alternative path to agility”.
During this 1-day class, each attendee will:
· Learn the Principles and Practices of the Kanban Method
· Design and implement a basic Kanban board
· Understand different forms of Kanban systems (incl. Proto Kanban)
· Learn the basics of visualizing different types of work and identifying risks associated with them
· Experience the benefit of WIP limits to improve flow
· Learn how to run the Kanban meetings to focus on the work and allow the team to organize around it
· Building a higher level of quality through the use of a Team Kanban
· Know that there is much more in the Kanban body of knowledge to learn
Learning Objectives
Learning Outcome 1:Explain the basics, motivation, and benefits of the Kanban Method
LO 1.1. - Name the elements of the Kanban Method (there are 6 General Practices, Change Principles, and Service Delivery Principles).
LO 1.2. - Describe the importance of focus on customer needs, and the principle of managing work not workers (Services Principles).
LO 1.3. - Explain the advantages of Kanban “Pull” systems as enabled by WIP Limits.
LO 1.4. - Explain that Kanban is the humane “start with what you do now” approach, and how this relates to applying Kanban in a team (Change Principles – leadership at all levels, evolutionary change).
LO 1.5. - Live by the “Start where you are” principle, eg. with the initial visualization and policies.
LO 1.6. - Explain the benefits of using Kanban in teams.
LO 1.7. - Understand that what they've learned is positioned on a path toward greater organizational maturity, and there's more to learn and a suggested way to get there.
Learning Outcome 2:Apply the Kanban practices 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in their day-to-day work, with focus on 1 and 2
LO 2.1. - Visualize: Read a basic Kanban board (incl. tickets) and explain how the visualisation supports the operation of the system in a team
LO 2.2. - Describe and differentiate between the terms type of work and class of service
LO 2.3. - Limit WIP: Describe different forms of WIP Limits (eg per-person (not desirable in the long run but good start), by activity)
LO 2.4. - Manage flow: Measure lead time and WIP levels (in their team)
LO 2.5. - Manage flow: Recall that there are simple charts (CFD, LT distribution) that can be based on data gathered easily, and they recognize them when they see it (eg based on their axes), and read them
LO 2.6. - Manage flow: Express that data and charts are for the team and their work (as opposed to being a pure management tool to beat them up)
LO 2.7. - Explicit Policies: Create practical agreements (basic policies / team operational agreement).
LO 2.8. - Feedback Loops: Run a Kanban Meeting with a team
LO 2.9. - Feedback Loops: Participate in a Team Review
Audience
This course is designed for any professional who is part of a product development or knowledge work environment and who is interesting in discovering how Kanban can help improve working environments. Kanban works across multiple functions of an organisation, from senior members of staff looking to adopt Lean Management to members of delivery teams willing to improve their working practices.

This course does not have any pre-requisites.

You should allow some time prior to the course read the workbook that will be the preparation for your course. We'll also send you an e-book Kanban Essentials. You may also wish to familiarise yourself with what to expect from this course.
Certifying Bodies & Exams
This course is accredited by David J Anderson and Kanban University (KU). Participants will receive a TKP certificate of course completion from Kanban University as well as membership of KU.

Hugo loves teaching and consulting in Agile, Lean and DevOps, using new governance approaches and Agile practices to change the traditional business model. For the last 10 years, he has been an enthusiastic and versatile Agile Learner all over Europe, and in 2014 he founded the successful conference Scrumday Portugal, now eXperience Agile conferences (eXperience Agile & DevOps, World Agility Forum and Agile Human Factors).
Hugo is also an Accredited Certified Trainer of DevOps Institute, Developments Agile Skills Association, Lean Kanban University, Scrum Foundations by Scrum Alliance, Project Manager by Project Management Institute, and International Business Analysis Institute, and he is also a trainer in programs such as CBAP, PMP, RMP, ACP, COBIT, ITIL, Design Thinking, Leadership, Kanban, TBR, Lego® Serious Play, SAFe, LeSS, and Scrum.

FAQ
What do I wear?
Wear what makes you feel comfortable while trying not to make others uncomfortable. We will be in jeans and golf shirts, even if the course is live training be like if you were going to the office (perhaps no shoes :))
Will food be provided?
Depends, coffee breaks and lunch will be provided in one of the best hotels in town excpet if this is a live training course. (virtual - BYOC)
Do I need to bring a computer to the event?
No. Personal computers are not necessary. All course material will be provided.
Is this course in English?
We held the course in English, Portuguese or Spanish. The materials will always be the updated versions from KU, and in engish but, the trainer speakes English, Portuguese, Spanish and French, any of this can be your course language.
